[email protected] the radacsi group's research focuses on electrospinning nanostructured materials, and developing 3d electrospinning technology. some of the materials fabricated in the radacsi lab are: nanostructured batteries, fuel cells and supercapacitors on the energy side; pharmaceuticals, artificial skin and biosensors on the medical side. see the group members here see our research facilities here support our research here open positions new: fully funded phd studentship available on 3d optically responsive nanostructured cell scaffolds. this is a 4-year phd (unlike the standard 3.5 year uk phd), as it is within the epsrc centre for doctoral training in intelligent sensing and measurement. you will learn how to synthesize and characterize optical nanostructures for monitoring clinically relevant bio-markers, how to fabricate 3d nanostructures (3d nanoprinting), how to integrate optical probes within cell scaffolds, how to assess in vitro sensor performance and how to work with cell cultures. within the project you will use state-of-the-art characterization techniques. part of the work will be carried out at the material research institute empa in st. gallen (switzerland) (eth domain). you will work with our prototype 3d nanoprinter, make solutions and hydrogels, use cell cultures and microscopes (sem, confocal, fluorescent, etc.). experience with cell cultures and/or nanotechnology is a plus. application deadline: 31th may 2018. phd position in the area of wearable & ultrasensitive electronics for early disease detection nanomaterials are opening new windows in medical care. due to their extraordinary properties they can be used for detection and treatment of diseases. wearable devices, like apple watch, can already monitor our heart beat every few minutes. imagine having a wearable device that could tell you if you have health problems, and should turn to your doctor. in the nanomaterials laboratory we are building ultrasensitive, low-cost biosensors that can detect biomarkers indicating serious diseases, like diabetes mellitus. we would like to develop this technology further, and build a system that can monitor various diseases without discomfort of the user. self-funded candidates from all over the world are also encouraged to apply. please apply here. ​ self-funded students for a ph.d. position are welcome to apply. the prototype of a novel 3d nanoprinter will be used to fabricate stretchable self-healing, skin-like materials and scaffolds with stem cells for making artificial skin and organs. enthusiastic applicants with a very strong cv should contact dr. norbert radacsi. please only apply if you already have funding that is sufficient for the uk (covers tuition fee & living expenses). ​ for chinese applicants i can recommend the csc/university of edinburgh scholarship that can fully fund the ph.d. program. it's not open for 2018/19 applications yet, but should be open around september 2018. please note that it's very competitive!
